"Honor all men, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king."
1 Peter 2:17
Since U.S. Presidents didn't exist when the Bible was written, I am going to assume that a biblical parallel can accurately be made that "king" and "president" can be synonymous. (Matt or other biblical scholars who might be reading, please correct me if I'm wrong).
Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. will take the oath of office as President of the United States 5 days from today, January 20, 2021. At age 78, he will be the oldest man ever sworn in as President. He and his first wife Neilia were married in 1966 and had three children, but she and daughter Naomi died in a car wreck in 1972 leaving Joe with two young sons, Beau and Hunter, only a few weeks after he was first elected to the United States Senate from Delaware. At the time of his swearing-in, he was the 6th youngest senator in America's history. Biden married his second wife, Jill, in 1977, and they had daughter Ashley in 1981. Son Beau died of cancer in 2015. Biden now has 5 grandchildren. He was continuously re-elected to the Senate and served there until he was tapped by Barack Obama to be his running mate in the 2008 presidential campaign. The campaign was successful, and he served two terms as U.S. Vice President. No doubt, Joe Biden brings a wealth of life and career experience to the White House. I intend to honor him and pray for him. This is my prayer for today:
Dear Heavenly Father, I lift up Joe Biden to you in these days. I pray that his inauguration day will be one of calmness, peace, joy, and celebration with no hint of violence or disruption. I pray that in spite of the restrictions of the pandemic, he will be able to finally realize the culmination of years of dreaming and his wife Jill will bask in standing beside him wearing her brand new clothes.
Father, I ask you to help him realize all of the good people and aspects of America and do what he can to KEEP them on a positive track and that he will clearly see the wrongs in the country that need to be corrected. I pray that he will truly be the President of ALL the people, in spite of or with the aid of his political party. I earnestly pray that he will have the wisdom and the resolve to unite our country.
I pray, Father, for his mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health during the time he is in office. Our country desperately needs a leader who is strong, sharp, and peace-loving. Protect him from harm. Protect him from debilitating illness while he's in the White House. Father, he has shared about his Catholic faith, so I ask you to use that or whatever means You see fit to bring him closer to you and to instill in him a desire to be in Your will. I ask you to give him the physical stamina to survive the grueling demands of his office, and I ask you to give him a clear head and a controlled tongue.
Dear Lord, I know that You see the Big Picture. You know what the next four years will bring and that ultimately You are in control and You truly do have "the whole world in Your hands." Help me to trust You.
Forgive me for doubting and complaining and please show me how to best honor Joe Biden.
In Jesus' Name. Amen
Please join me in praying for our new President.
1 Peter 2:13-17 -- "13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority,14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.15 For such is the will of God, that by doing right you silence the ignorance of foolish people.16 Act as free people, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bond-servants of God.17 Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king."
