Until last week, the Funnel Cake Queen was practically hidden, tucked away in a corner before the big intersection of Danville Road and Carridale Street in Decatur, Alabama. Now, though, it is in a larger, more visible spot, along Beltline Road almost directly behind Panda Express and Krispy Kreme. The specific address is 1614 Beltline Road SW.
Their hours are noon to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. Kenya Congress is the owner, and the steady flow of customers I witnessed both inside and in the drive-thru are great indicators that this business will be a big success.
There are 26 toppings and 4 syrups from which to choose, and there are sizes to please one person or for several to share. My granddaughter Bethany and I shared a Contessa and took a Queen back to her house for her siblings. Her mom, who is a self-avowed chocoholic, took one whiff and swooned.
The prices are good. You can spend as little as $2.00 or as much as $10.00, depending on the amount of splurge you've decided to allow yourself. Funnel Cake Queen also offers snow cones, ice cream and a short list of quick meal items, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, and an interesting-sounding hot cheeto pie.
Service was surprisingly quick, and the place was cheerful, bright and clean. I have a feeling I will be using grandchildren as a convenient reason to visit often in the weeks to come.
No longer do we have to wait for the fair or a street festival to come to town. Now, we can get funnel cakes every day except Monday.
I wonder if they'll come up with some breakfast combos in the future. . . .
Quick note: Don't look for a post next Monday. The 13th Annual Pearson Cousins Camp will be underway with 11 campers (ages 5 to 15) in attendance. I'm quite sure you'll read all about it soon. :)
